County Leadership Team

Michelle L. Attreed provides oversight of Mecklenburg County’s Finance Department, the Office of the Tax Collector, Information Technology Services, Human Resources, and the Assessor’s Office. Attreed previously worked for Prince William County, Virginia for 30 years, most recently serving as acting deputy county executive for government operations, performance and innovation. She also served more than 11 years as Prince William County’s chief financial officer (CFO), two years as deputy finance director, along with other roles of increasing responsibility after joining the organization in 1993, including serving as acting human resources director. As CFO, she provided fiscal stewardship and accountability for more than $2 billion in public funds. Her professional experience also includes working with a regional accounting firm as a senior auditor and as a staff accountant with the U.S. Government Accountability Office.

Attreed is an active member of the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA), a nonprofit organization that aims to improve financial management for state and local governments. She is a recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Virginia Women in Public Finance and recently participated in the Virginia Women’s Municipal Leadership Institute and the National Association of Counties’ (NACo) High Performance Leadership Academy. She has served on the Board for the Virginia Public Building Authority, an appointment made by the Governor, and the Virginia Association of Counties’ (VACo) Finance and Elections Steering Committee. She served as a trustee on three municipal pension plans, one post-employment benefit plan, and a self-insurance group in addition to serving on various steering committees for Prince William County.  

Attreed is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) and holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Virginia Tech and a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from George Mason University.
